Did you know “The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $1,300 to an annual salary.”
For August, the book of the month, I chose Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry.
Let's start with what is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is said to be the capacity to be aware of, control, express one's emotions, and handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
Now I know many of you may be asking, "how does this relate to my faith?"
Jesus displays emotions through how he communicates and interacts with others. Self-awareness and personal understanding allow for application, expansion, and focus. As feelings are understood, they take their place in our spiritual life of faith.
Just take a breath.
It is also empowering to remember that you are responsible for what you allow to influence you.
One of the best tools I picked up out of this book seems silly, but so simple and falls under his self-management tool #1: Breathe Right.
Shallow breathing handicaps your ability to self-manage. How? Your brain is responsible for 20% of your entire body's oxygen supply. It needs oxygen to control essential functions like breathing, sight, managing your mood, and more complex functions such as keeping you alert, focused, and calm. When you deprive your brain of oxygen, this leads to poor concentration, forgetfulness, mood swings, anxious thoughts, and a lack of energy.
So the next time you are in a stressful or provoking situation, just breathing, literally tells your brain - "don't panic," and you can find yourself in a position to communicate your thoughts more effectively.
Bradberry goes through a list of 16 other practical tools aside from breathing that you can start doing right now to improve your self-awareness. This book explains the importance of emotions in your life, how they help and hurt your ability to navigate the world, and practical advice on how to improve your emotional intelligence and why that is the key to leading a successful life. But like everything else and ESPECIALLY your faith - this takes PRACTICE!
As we better understand the importance of emotional intelligence, we can initiate conversations to introduce others to the distinguishing qualities of relational wisdom.
