Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
There is incredible beauty and connection between the spirit of believers with the Lord and each other in music.
Songs of worship and praise can well up in the soul in times of joy and sorrow.
The Spirit of Music
“Music is the literature of the heart; it commences where speech ends,” said French author and poet Alphonse de Lamartine. Not only does it enhance our physical health and performance, but it also plays on our emotions and mood. Our human brain, along with our nervous system, is hard-wired to differentiate music from random noise and respond in very peculiar ways to rhythm and repetition. Music stimulates more parts of the brain than most other activities. By listening to music, no matter the kind, you can significantly boost the functions of the frontal lobe.
"Megan, what does my frontal lobe have to do with my faith?"
The frontal lobe is used for thinking, decision-making, and planning. Furthermore, music is processed in the language center of the brain, unlike casual talks and random racket, it spans both sides of the temporal lobe. Language and words are interpreted in the left hemisphere while music and sounds are interpreted in the right hemisphere.
But WAIT! There is more!!
It does not stop here.
Sure, music has many physical benefits, but what music does to your spirit? Do you know those songs that just hit you differently? In many ways, they even feel anointed?
To be spiritual is to be musical, and to be musical is to be spiritual. One prime example would be Gospel music. Gospel can give you communion with God through worship; the more time spent meditating on the words, contemplating the melodies, and offering them to the Lord from your heart, the more your heart joins with his.
Gospel refreshes your soul and cleanses it to fill it with the praise of God, thus strengthening your faith in God through its lyrics and implicit messages, allowing you to transcend, feel in touch with a higher power and make you feel closer to the Lord, more devout. Gospel is the idyllic foundation for your spiritual journey and growth. In fine, music, spirituality, and health are each culturally situated complex phenomena. The dynamic between the three, create something beyond comprehension, something that exceeds reality to connect your soul with the celestial.
